Licensed Dutch Casinos

It is now legal to gamble at Dutch online casinos for residents who are 18 years of age or older. Dutch authorities at KSA started regulating the online gambling market on 1 October 2021. The Remote Gambling Act (Wet Kansspelen op afstand, Koa) was entered into law on 1 April 2021. This allowed operators to apply for the new local license to legally offer gambling via the internet in the Netherlands. So far, 18 operators from 28, who have applied earlier last year, have been approved.

Online Casino Regulation in Netherlands

Driven by consumer protection, the new Dutch legislation and regulation aim to prevent addiction as well as money laundering associated with illegal gambling. As such, all licensed operators are required to establish the identities of all their customers under the Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Prevention Act. In addition, the casinos are obliged to check if a player is registered with the Central Register of Exclusion of Gaming or Centraal Register Uitsluiting Kansspelen (CRUKS), the Central Register Exclusion of Chance Games.

Licensed online casinos in the Netherlands are also required to pro-actively monitor players based on their gaming behaviour and flag any deviations that may suggest problem gambling. As a casino customer, you will also be obliged to set various responsible gambling limits that are already widely used in the EU and UK. These include time limits, deposit and balance limits.

Players can always have an overview of game information that includes, among other things, the return-to-player (RTP) rates and volatility. That is in contrast to the unlicensed sites, where the RTP may be hidden, leaving players with no knowledge of possible payout risks.

Gambling in Netherlands Summary

As a Dutch citizen, it is in your interest to play at the locally licensed sites and avoid unlicensed casinos. While the choice of legal online casinos in the Netherlands may be small at this moment, the operators that have committed to the new standards are designed to be safe and fair. Naturally, this also means that all casino clients will have to jump through more hoops than before. This may be inconvenient but when done the right way, it should ultimately be for the benefit of everyone. Time will tell if players will accept what the new NL casinos have to offer or go play elsewhere. All we know is that online gambling regulation is something that all EU countries will have to face sooner or later. However, put too much pressure on players at once and more taxpayers’ money may soon start flowing out and into the pockets of the Caribbean-licensed casinos with very different agendas.
