Miner Donkey Trouble Slot Review (Play’n GO)

You could easily fall into the (mine) trap of thinking that Play’n GO have regurgitated yet another mining themed slot. And whilst yes, that’s true, they’ve added their Scandinavian style to it and created, what we think, is a jewel.

The release of the terribly named, Miner Donkey Trouble, comes as part of Play’n GO’s cluster pays slot games. Having shown some diversity with grid slots like Diamond Vortex and Gold Volcano, we were intrigued as to where the Swedish game developers would head with this one. Bucking the cliched mining trend, Miner Donkey Trouble is not only a brilliantly good-looking slot but also a hugely immersive inclusion to their ever-impressive back catalogue. Traditionally, the collectable and randomised base game features with occasional free spins bonuses also serve as the driving force in this grid slot, no-payline madness.

Miner Donkey Trouble was released on 4 January 2021 and is available for play at licensed Play’n GO slot sites like Energy Casino.

Miner Donkey Trouble Features

The game comes with a 5Ă—7 grid that has collapsing symbols throughout. Any winnings paylines that occur will be removed and new symbols will fall into place.

Whilst the miner and the donkey are an odd couple, to say the least, they bounce off each well throughout the game. You need both of them working for each other to hit the more exciting elements, but the storyline of them both is a good bit of fun if nothing else. Where Miner Donkey Trouble excels is the features and the games that are included throughout. The game comes with a 96.27% RTP and is classed as a medium to high volatility.

It’s not perfect though and the gameplay can become a little stale as a result. You often go on fairly lengthy baron runs, which is not uncommon for mid-high volatility, but when the wins do drop, they can be frustratingly small. At times you wish that the scruffy-looking miner would stick his pokey axe where the sun doesn’t shine, but we understand that there are industry standards here and that sort of action is held for much more “niche” games!

As mentioned, Miner Donkey Trouble is all about the bonus and feature rounds. It’s a game that’s packed with them and follows a similar pattern other games in the series.

Donkey Destruction

Donkey Destruction — an excellent source of Golden Multiplier Nuggets.

Donkey Destruction is one of the key features of the game and one of the most commonly played. To trigger this you need to, well, feed the donkey. All winning combinations are sent over to the donkey and then from that, you begin to fill his meter. Admittedly, they make it a little more in keeping with the theme in that you give him carrots, but it’s essentially the same thing.

The more carrots he gets, oddly, the more annoyed he gets, but that’s a good thing!

  • Donkey Destruction 1 – Triggered by 18 winning symbols – Results in destroying all rock symbols that are on the grid.
  • Donkey Destruction 2 – Triggered by 40 winning symbols – Results in destroying all gems and rocks on the grid.
  • Donkey Destruction 3 – Triggered by 50 winnings symbols – Results in destroying all symbols on the grid, apart from Golden Nuggets and also guarantees up to 5 of these.

Golden Nuggets

Golden Nuggets are going to be one of your best friends in the game. These are linked to your multiplier wins and the more Golden Nuggets that appear, the higher the multiplier will be.

These bad boys need to appear in the bottom row to add +1 to your multiplier. It will then be applied to any other winning combination that forms on the grid. When they get going within the Donkey Destruction round, they start to become seriously valuable.

Pickaxe Wilds

Generating 4-10 random Wilds at once.

Two wilds float around the game in the form of the Miner’s Pickaxe and the Dimond Wild.

Diamond Wilds do not land on the grid but are created by the Pickaxe Wilds, and Dynamite Scatter features. Two of the Wilds will appear with every Dynamite Scatter explosion, whereas between 4 and 10 Diamond Wilds will be awarded with every Pickaxe Wilds trigger. For that, you’ll need a Pickaxe to appear on the screen. Once the winnings stop, the pickaxe feature will give you a second chance (after Donkey Destruction, if you have any pending).

Random Mega Symbols

Not a frequent feature, can also appear during Bonus.

The Random Mega Symbol can appear randomly throughout the game on any non-winning combination. When it does, it will create a series of grids that include 2Ă—2, 3Ă—3 or 4Ă—4 squares of either rock, gem or diamonds.

These winning combinations are still subject to cascading winning lines and given their potential grid size, can lead to multiple winning payouts.

Free Spins – Dynamite Scatters

Dynamite Scatter symbols are going to be your route into the free spins round. As the name would suggest, these symbols are highly explosive and with that will remove any symbols that surround it to create new combinations.

However, if you manage to trigger three of these in one round then you will get access to the bonus and 5 free spins to boot. Within the round, you can claim up to 20 additional free spins with any in-game multipliers attached rolling over.

Conclusion

Launching into another miner-themed slot didn’t exactly get us all weak at the knees. Even after reading a little more about Miner Donkey Trouble, it ticked a lot of cliché boxes. But we were, admittedly, way too quick to jump to conclusions. It’s a complicated game if you’re new to slots and there are lots of moving parts. But sticking with it is going to get you access to an exciting, engaging and action-packed game from Play’n GO.

The Swedes are smashing it right now and being able to take what we think is a pretty tired theme and make it compelling, has been impressive to see. Ties to the likes of Reactoonz 2, Miner Donkey Trouble has enough going on as a cluster pays slot variation to keep it fresh and exciting while building on proven mechanics as opposed to the more innovative releases like Diamond Vortex and Gold Volcano.

It’s a game that you need to stick with though and it takes time to get to grips with the likes of Donkey Destruction and Pickaxe wilds. There can be long periods of not a lot happening before that Donkey decided to go off on one, springing the game into life.

Overall, and it’s another winner from Play’n GO, making it a quality addition to an increasingly exciting catalogue of their grid slots.

Good luck!
